| Why Spain? Why now? The simple answer is opportunity. The opportunity is there for the investor and the consumer. The country is a recipient of the benefits of Euro development. It has, along with Portugal, been the most positively affected by the Euro community. Until the early 1970’s it was under the dark shadow of Franco. After which, there was a period of uncertainty. By the mid 1980’s it had begun to develop a positive political identity. By the mid 1990’s it had become a member of the European Union. The EURO group poured billions into Spain and Portugal to bring them to parody. Today, the Spanish infrastructure reflects that development. The education system is excellent and the economy is developing. The Spainish middle class is growing, and a thriving tourist industry is rapidly developing. There is a housing shortage and a lack of development except along the coast. As has been the historic trend, Europeans have gobbled up coastal properties, but to date, the interior has remained virtually undiscovered. And that interior is exceptional. So far, development has petered out at 30-40 miles inland. This is interesting in several ways. First, the lack of population density 30-60 miles inland makes for a very pleasant environment. Second it allows for exceptional values in property to be found. Third, from an American viewpoint, to be 50 miles from the beach and 100 miles from ski areas is paradise. The appeal of this area does not stop with terrain. Mortgages in Spain are consumer freindly, and the Real Estate is reasonable. The towns are charming and the people are warm and generous. Each village or town has medical facilities and necessary amenities. Major hospitals are within reasonable reach from almost anywhere. (Even 50 miles is actually a short distance time wise, especially when compared to common travel time in US metropolitan areas.) Medical coverage is reasonable, a fraction of the costs in the United States, and available to virtually anyone. The education system is excellent, at least comparable to the United States. Food quality and cost is very good, and the general environment is relaxed and low key. The transportation system is superb, and makes all of Europe easily accessible. It has a reasonably pleasant climate, especially in the northeastern quadrant. The country gives early retirees and parents looking for good schools an excellent option. It is a beautiful country with great history. It has been ignored for the last two hundred years because of politics but today is ready for a new renaissance. |
